Dandruff presents as bran-like scaly patches scattered within hair-bearing areas of the scalp. Typically, seborrheic dermatitis presents with scaly, flaky, itchy, and red skin. It particularly affects the sebaceous-gland-rich areas of skin. In adolescents and adults, seborrhoeic dermatitis usually presents as scalp scaling or as redness of the nasolabial fold. Seborrhoeic dermatitis is diagnosed by its clinical appearance and behavior. As malassezia is a normal component of skin flora, its presence on microscopy of skin scrapings is not diagnostic. Skin biopsy may be helpful but is rarely indicated.
